The Muse breathes in the world around us—and breathes out Story. I can’t explain the process, but I recognize it when I see or hear something and it resonates for me in that particular way that means I have found another piece in the creative puzzle.

It was like that the first time I rode on The Maid of the Mist. While I was writing Sebastian, the first book in the Ephemera duology, I went to Niagara Falls, NY, for a “working vacation”—a few days away from all the “shoulds” and “have tos” that can intrude on writing time when I’m home. I walked along the Niagara River and felt the pull and the power of the water. I admired the American Falls and that tumbled dance of water and stone. And I rode on The Maid of the Mist, a boat that takes tourists for a ride along the river, past the American Falls and into the misty, thundering heart of the Horseshoe Falls.

I don’t know what the other tourists saw when they looked at that curving wall of water. I saw the Island in the Mist. I saw the place Glorianna Belladonna calls home. I saw a place that only exists for the hearts that can reach it, a place Michael, the Magician, needs to reach in order to save his part of Ephemera—and his family.

I saw all of those things in a few moments. Then I was back with the rest of the passengers, awed by the beauty—and the power—of the Falls. The seductive lure of water. When I wrote Belladonna, I gave Michael pieces of the walks I took along the river and the wonder of being on The Maid of the Mist. But when he is tested by the river, he does not have a sturdy boat with big engines. He faces the river with nothing but his will—and his heart. If he succeeds, he will find the woman who, with his help, can save Ephemera.

If he succeeds, he may lose what his own heart needs most.

Ephemera is a world shaped by the landscapes of the heart. I enjoyed taking the journey with Glorianna and Michael. I hope you do too.
