When did you start writing?

When I was very young! So long ago that I can’t remember.

Where do you get your ideas?

I don’t have ideas. I try to write without them. If you wait for ideas, you’d never get started. Much better to try to just make it up.

Can you give your top three tips to becoming a successful author?

1. Read!

2. Write every day.

3. Read some more. Think about what you read. Take pride in your craft. Keep working to get better at it.

Favourite memory?

My grandfather telling me stories.

Favourite place in the world and why?

Bed. Because I am extremely, exceptionally, lazy.

What are your hobbies?

Drawing, staring into space, prodding the piano with a listless finger, drifting about, wasting time drinking cappuccino in various cafes.

If you hadn’t been a writer, what do you think you would have been?

Well, I was a teacher, many years ago, but I don’t think I could have kept it up. Postmen have a healthy sort of life – exercise, out in all weathers, time to think that would do.
