In October 2011, Chosen By Fate, Book 2 in the “Para-Ops series”, releases. One only has to look at the book’s fabulous cover to know this story’s a tad different, even for a paranormal romance. The heroine, Wraith, is literally the walking dead, a female with no memory of her human life, no pulse, no fingerprints, and no monitorable brain activity. Worst of all, she can’t be touched without feeling pain. So what’s a 5’9″, blue-skinned, white-haired, hazy-eyed female to do? Talk loud, kick butt, and never show she’s afraid.
Only…Wraith is afraid. Afraid of dying (again) before finding out who she was and afraid of dying without truly mattering to someone. That’s where the hero, human shaman Caleb O’Flare comes in. Caleb cares for his teammate Wraith and will do almost anything for her—but he can’t stand the thought of touching her and causing her pain. It takes a mission investigating crimes in the feline community for this pair to finally accept that love is worth any risk, be it pain or death.
Sometimes it’s hard to remember that the absence of pain doesn’t necessarily equate to happiness. In fact, some of our most cherished life experiences cause us pain at one point or another, whether it’s physical or emotional. Even so, is pain a necessary ingredient for joy? For a life well lived? I’m not quite ready to concede that either. But I enjoyed exploring this issue through Wraith and Caleb’s eyes. When I was done writing their story, I was even more convinced of one thing—love heals. I hope that’s one message readers will take away from the story, as well.
In this series, each member of the Para-Ops team challenges the other; in the process they shed light on the things that bind us: flaws, attributes, primal fears and basic desires. I look forward to hearing what you think of Chosen By Fate and its predecessor, Chosen By Blood.
