Rafferty Powell has resolved to destroy his hated arch-nemesis, Magnus Montmorency. The pair have exchanged challenge coins, and their next battle will be their last. But Rafferty never expected to meet a woman whose desire for Magnus’s end matches his own-and whose soul sparks the firestorm within him…
One of the most wonderful things about creating an ongoing series like “Dragonfire” is that readers become involved with the characters so much. It’s fun to hear from readers that they want a certain Pyr hero to have his H.E.A. soon! Rafferty Powell, the hero ofDarkfire Kiss, has always been a popular character with readers and the one for whom people most frequently request a firestorm. I think that’s probably because Rafferty is such a romantic. Unlike the other dragon dudes, many of whom had mixed feelings about making permanent commitments, Rafferty has yearned for his firestorm for hundreds of years.
This is a bit tricky, too, in terms of storytelling. It would have been pretty easy to give Rafferty a firestorm with a nice girl, and have their H.E.A. be resolved in ten or twenty pages. I had to make him work for it more than that! Also, I’m a firm believer that once a series has become established and the parameters of the world are familiar to readers, it’s time to shake things up a bit.
So, Rafferty’s firestorm is the one that launches the mythic darkfire, a force that the Pyr have whispered about for millennia. Darkfire is assumed to be very bad news: it’s a powerful force for change, one that turns assumptions on their heads and undoes much of what is taken for granted. Rafferty, as you might imagine, is shocked that his firestorm could be the one that changes the fortunes of the Pyr forever. At the same time, he’s fascinated by his destined mate, Melissa, who challenges every one of his expectations yet enchants him just the same. As for Melissa, she can’t believe she’s finally met a man like Rafferty. Independent of his shape shifting powers, he’s exactly the kind of man who could claim her heart forever—even though she fears that she won’t be able to give Rafferty what he needs to love her in return.
Initially I was worried about giving Rafferty both the H.E.A. he deserved and the firestorm that would put him to the test. I didn’t want to disappoint any readers! But I love this book and I’m excited by the changes the darkfire inflicts on the Pyr. I hope that you enjoy Darkfire Kiss too, whether you’re a Dragonfire fan already or whether this is your first visit to the world of my dragon shifters called the Pyr.
Happy reading and all my best!
