Overview

A SPY. AN AIRSHIP. AND A BROKEN HEART.

After losing her husband to a rogue French agent, Charlotte Moncrieffe wants to make her mark in international espionage. And what could be better for recovering secret long-lost documents from the Palais Garnier than her stealth dirigible, Gossamer Wing? Her spymaster father has one condition: He won’t send her to Paris without an ironclad cover.

Dexter Hardison prefers inventing to politics, but his title as Makesmith Baron and his formidable skills make him an ideal husband-imposter for Charlotte. And the unorthodox undercover arrangement would help him in his own field of discovery.

But from Charlotte and Dexter’s marriage of convenience comes a distraction—a passion that complicates an increasingly dangerous mission. For Charlotte, however, the thought of losing Dexter also opens her heart to a thrilling new future of love and adventure.

Dear Reader Letter

Dear Reader,

Well, I set out to write a steampunk romance, and I wound up writing a series. Gossamer Wing turned out to be a much bigger book than I intended, but there were still too many ideas, too many places and too many characters left to fit them all in. The second Steam and Seduction novel (Scarlet Devices) will be out in a few months, I’m hard at work on the third, and I already know what the fourth will have to be about. Characters have spoken. Plot bunnies have been bred.

I’m so deep in the series, sometimes I forget that only a few people have even read Gossamer Wing yet. So where to begin introducing newcomers to the world of Steam and Seduction? With characters, of course. Because romances are, at their heart, always about the characters. Meet Dexter Hardison, the Makesmith Baron, and Charlotte Moncrieffe, the beautiful widow who moonlights as a spy:

“I’ve never seen anything like it. I knew there was a dirigible involved, of course, but I simply never imagined something like this. Is this . . . wood? Leather?” Dexter felt at the seams and joints, the fragile-seeming skeleton he could feel within the opal-blue silk casing. Even his knowledgeable fingers had trouble identifying the light, sturdy substance that gave the thing structure and some shape before it was filled with gas.

“You’re no ladies’ man, are you, Mr. Hardison?”

Lady Moncrieffe was staring him down, as cool as ever, but he somehow got the impression she was trying very hard not to laugh.

“A gentleman would never tell, madam.”

“A gentleman wouldn’t have to if he could identify corset boning when he runs his hands all over it.”

“Ah!”

“Ah, indeed.”

“That’s brilliant!”

The whole thing was brilliant.

I hope you will find it brilliant too, dear reader, from the bucolic byways of the New York Dominion to the glittering, treacherous night sky over Paris.
