Overview

FIRST IN A NEW TRILOGY

From Charlaine Harris, the bestselling author who created Sookie Stackhouse and her world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, comes a darker locale—populated by more strangers than friends. But then, that’s how the locals prefer it…

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).

Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth…

Praise

“With polished ease, Harris brings her cast on stage, pairs them off to reveal character through conversation, and ambles the mystery along…While not ignoring the downsides of smalltown life, with too-knowing neighbors and teens desperate to get out, Harris also works in its joys and comforts. This is a solid entry in Harris’s catalogue and will do very well with her fans.”—Publishers Weekly

Praise for Charlaine Harris and her #1 New York Times bestselling Sookie Stackhouse novels:

“Harris treasures the everyday routines of small-town family life, burnishing little moments until they glow.”—Los Angeles Times

“Inventive and funny with an engaging, smart, and sexy heroine.”—The Denver Post

“[Harris’s] mash-up of genres is delightful, taking elements from mysteries, horror stories, and romances.”—Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Dear Reader Letter

Dear Reader

Charlaine Harris needs no introduction to readers. Her Sookie Stackhouse novels—the basis for the HBO hit show True Blood—is a publishing phenomenon. I’ve been Charlaine’s editor almost from the beginning of her publishing relationship with Berkley. I (along with gazillions of others) love Sookie.

It was bittersweet to work on the last book in the series, Dead Ever After in 2013. The question then was—what’s next for Charlaine? Well, my respect for her as an author only grew when I read the “what’s next”, Midnight Crossroad, the first of a trilogy set in the small—and odd—Texas town of Midnight.

In writing Midnight Crossroad, Charlaine has chosen to challenge herself as a writer, when she could have taken the easy path and done something like a direct Sookie spin-off. Though the book maintains the major element that has run through all of her work (the strong sense of place), it represents a departure for her in two ways—the story is told third person and from multiple (three to be exact) viewpoints.

Will all of Sookie’s many fans like it? It’s hard to know. While not a spin-off, it is set in Sookie’s world—there are vampires and shifters and witches (and in subsequent volumes, actual characters from the Sookie series). But, while there are romantic entanglements, the mystery is front-and-center. In that way, it is much more like the Harper Connelly novels—including the fact that Manfred Bernardo, a secondary character from the Harper books, is a principle protagonist in Midnight Crossroad. (Charlaine has included characters from the Lily Bard and Aurora Teagarden mysteries, too!)

So—we are all very excited about the publication of Midnight Crossroad. It’s on sale now. As the editor , I highly recommend it!

All the best,
