Overview

The #1 New York Times bestselling author who created Sookie Stackhouse and her world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, “is back with a vengeance” (Tangled Web) with this first book in an all-new trilogy—and inviting readers to an even darker place on the map…

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).

Praise

Praise for Midnight Crossroad

“Excellent…captures the same magic as the world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, and takes it to another level. No matter how unlikely or fantastic an element [Harris] might introduce into her pages it’s always down-home and believable. She’s the Mark Twain of things that live under your bed.”—Houston Press

“Fans might be sad to say good-bye to Sookie, but they’ll be so intrigued by the denizens of Midnight they won’t have time to mourn.”—A Knife and a Quill

“An unforgettable kick-start to a fresh and very exciting new series.”—Fiction Fascination

“Don’t hesitate, jump in with both feet and let the storytelling begin.”—Tangled Web

“As intimate and deep as the Stackhouse novels.”—Library Journal

“I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed.”—Fantasy Book Review

“I can safely say I’ll be back for more.”—SFFWorld

“Unlike anything I have ever read before…This is a great start to a new series.”—Elder Park Reviews

Dear Reader Letter

Dear Reader

Charlaine Harris needs no introduction to readers. Her Sookie Stackhouse novels—the basis for the HBO hit show True Blood—is a publishing phenomenon. I’ve been Charlaine’s editor almost from the beginning of her publishing relationship with Berkley. I (along with gazillions of others) love Sookie.

It was bittersweet to work on the last book in the series, Dead Ever After in 2013. The question then was—what’s next for Charlaine? Well, my respect for her as an author only grew when I read the “what’s next”, Midnight Crossroad, the first of a trilogy set in the small—and odd—Texas town of Midnight.

In writing Midnight Crossroad, Charlaine has chosen to challenge herself as a writer, when she could have taken the easy path and done something like a direct Sookie spin-off. Though the book maintains the major element that has run through all of her work (the strong sense of place), it represents a departure for her in two ways—the story is told third person and from multiple (three to be exact) viewpoints.

Will all of Sookie’s many fans like it? It’s hard to know. While not a spin-off, it is set in Sookie’s world—there are vampires and shifters and witches (and in subsequent volumes, actual characters from the Sookie series). But, while there are romantic entanglements, the mystery is front-and-center. In that way, it is much more like the Harper Connelly novels—including the fact that Manfred Bernardo, a secondary character from the Harper books, is a principle protagonist in Midnight Crossroad. (Charlaine has included characters from the Lily Bard and Aurora Teagarden mysteries, too!)

So—we are all very excited about the publication of Midnight Crossroad. It’s on sale now. As the editor , I highly recommend it!

All the best,
