Avery, an imprint focusing on health, self-help, diet, and fitness, is best known for publishing cutting-edge, but accessible books from the top experts in their fields.

Founded in 1976, Avery quickly established itself as the most successful independent publisher of health books in the market. Penguin Group (USA) acquired it as an imprint in 1999 with a strong commitment to continue publishing respected, up-to-the-minute books with a clear focus on helping people make the most of their lives.

Leading  the backlist are some of the bestselling health books of all time, including Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Phyllis Balch, Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, and The New Rules of Lifting series by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove. Brian Tart

President and Publisher

Brian Tart was named President and Publisher of Gotham in 2014.  He remains in his separate role as President and Publisher of Dutton, and is also President and Publisher of Avery and Viking Studio. He joined Penguin in 1998 as the Editor in Chief of Dutton and was named Publisher in 2005 and then President in 2006. He has published  #1 bestselling authors such as Ken Follett, Harlan Coben, Eckhart Tolle, Al Franken, and  Mark Owen, author of No Easy Day.  A twenty-year veteran of the publishing industry, Mr. Tart started his career as an Editorial Assistant at Bantam Books and rose to Senior Editor before leaving to join Dutton in 1998.

Megan Newman

Vice President and Editorial Director

Megan Newman is the Vice President and Editorial Director of Avery. She also runs Viking Studio, a high quality illustrated book imprint, and acquires for Gotham. Her recent New York Times bestsellers include Wheelmen by Reed Albergotti and Vanessa O’Connell, and I Beat the Odds by Michael Oher.  Prior to joining Penguin in 2004,  Megan was the editorial director of HarperResource where she published bestselling books by Nicholas Perricone, Bobbi Brown, Wayne Dyer, Lily Pulitzer, and more.

Lindsay Gordon

Publicity Director

Lindsay Gordon joined Avery as a Senior Publicist in 2009. She was named Publicity Manager in 2010 and Assistant Director in 2012, Associate Director and Director in 2014. She is also the Director of Publicity for Gotham Books. In addition to managing the publicity department, Lindsay works directly with a number of Avery’s best-selling authors and those on the forefront of the food-as-medicine movement, such as Dr. Terry Wahls, Robin Quivers, and Abel James.  Lindsay has orchestrated publicity campaigns for a number of Avery’s breakout bestsellers including the first Avery New York Times Bestseller, The Coupon Mom’s Guide to Cutting Your Grocery Bills in Half, the #1 New York Times Bestseller, Clark Howard’s Living Large in Lean Times, Robin Quivers’ The Vegucation of Robin, and Angela Liddon’s runaway vegan cookbook bestseller The Oh She Glows Cookbook. Before joining Avery, Lindsay worked at the former Doubleday Broadway Publishing Group at Random House, Inc.

Lucia Watson

Senior Editor

Lucia Watson is a Senior Editor acquiring for the Avery, Gotham, and Viking Studio imprints. Lucia began her publishing career as an editorial assistant at Viking in 1999, and joined Avery in 2005. She acquires a diverse list of books in categories including health, psychology, science, parenting, memoir, food narrative, cooking, and lifestyle. Lucia’s recent titles include New York Times bestseller Prevent & Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and New York Times bestseller Marbles by Ellen Forney, as well as Gutbliss by Robynne Chutkan, MD, Canyon Ranch: Nourish by Scott Uehlein, The Oh She Glows Cookbook by Angela Liddon, and the James Beard Award-winning What Katie Ate by Katie Quinn Davies.
