Puffin Books launched Speak, a new imprint aimed at teens, in 2002. Bringing classic and cutting edge fiction to the forefront of the paperback list, Speak provides a dedicated home for older readers. With a range of the quality fiction and non-fiction Puffin is known for, Speak combines contemporary novels featuring characters with whom readers can identify, historical fiction that transports the reader to new worlds, smart, original series fiction, and a mix of award-winning authors and bright new talent. In Speak, everyone has a voice.
Everything from National Book Awards to Printz Awards to Coretta Scott King Awards and Finalists can be found on the list. The Speak list highlights these strong titles year after year. Some of our gems are Printz Medal winner Looking for Alaska by John Green, Printz Honor book Fat Kid Rules the World by K.L. Going, and Carnegie Medal Nominee Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys. Speak has also launched a number of original series, including the Sweep books, which are attracting fans left and right.
Speak caters to both contemporary favorites and classics that last a lifetime, ranging from poignant John Green titles—such as Paper Towns and An Abundance of Katherines—to S. E. Hinton’s The Outsiders; the groundbreaking story that paved the way for countless young adult novels thereafter. Gripping nonfiction titles such as Christopher Award-winning Soldier X by Don L. Wulffson can also be found on Speak’s list.
Speak also publishes books with wide commercial appeal. Authors Laurie Halse Anderson and Maureen Johnson find their names on several Speak titles, along with Nightshade’s Andrea Cremer, What Happened to Goodbye’s Sarah Dessen, and Speak original author Robin Palmer. Puffin is also the paperback home for Marie Lu’s Legend series. Powerful, earnest young adult stories find great success in calling Speak—and Puffin in its entirety—a home for boundless, daring, and inspiring titles.
