Paul Volponi

Who He Is

Paul Volponi is a writer, journalist, and teacher living in New York City. For six years, he taught incarcerated teens on Rikers Island to read and write. This experience helped form the basis of his first young adult novel, Black and White, which won the IRA Young Adult Book Award. For another six years, he taught adolescents in a drug-treatment program, which inspired him to write Rooftop. Paul holds an M.A. in American Literature from City College of New York and a B.A. in English from Baruch.

What He Writes

Paul Volponi writes gritty fiction novels for teens, most of which take place in urban environments and deal with the daily triumphs and struggles of boys in these settings. His books, Black and White and Rooftop have been picked as an ALA Best Books for Young Adults, and he's received many other commendations.
