Growing up in a family with six boys and no girls, Jon Scieszka has always known what appeals to boys. After earning an MFA from Columbia University and working as an elementary school teacher, he published his first book with illustrator Lane Smith, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!. Jon's other books include The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, a Caldecott Honor Book, Knucklehead, and the Time Warp Trio series. In January 2008, Jon was appointed the inaugural National Ambassador for Young People's Literature by the Library of Congress.

Dear Readers and Might Be Readers,

What I love most about reading is that there is something out there for everyone. If you like prehistoric sharks, there is a prehistoric shark book. You are a fan of future space travel? Lots of space travel adventures. Funny stories? Got 'em. Scary stories. You bet. Graphic novels? Oh yeah. How to draw comics or build the best low-rider? Check, and check.

Reading is all about finding what you like to read.

And that's why, back in 2001, I started a literacy program called GUYS READ – to help guys find things they like to read.

When I was a boy, I liked to read funny books, history books, and all kinds of comic books. I remember loving Dr. Seuss, the Golden Book encyclopedias, Spiderman, Mad magazine, and Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos. I don't remember much of anything we read in school.

When I taught elementary school (for ten years in NYC), I saw a lot of kids, mostly boys, disconnected from reading in the same way. The thought behind all of my writing has been to reach readers with a story exciting enough, funny enough, compelling enough to inspire kids to want to read.

I don't write just for boys. I love that girls enjoy the crazy humor of The Stinky Cheese Man, the adventures of the Time Warp Trio, and my story of growing up with five brothers – Knucklehead. But plenty of boys enjoy my writing, because a lot of it is about being a boy.

In my work with GUYS READ, I am very careful to tell people to not stereotype "boy readers" and "girl readers", and to try to reach every reader by helping them find the reading they enjoy.

So try a bunch of different kinds of reading. Sample what's out there. There is something for everyone.
