Ranger's Apprentice

By John Flanagan
Ages 10 up | Grades 5 up

Why Boys Will Read It:

Epic battles, riveting adventure scenes, and heroes!

What It's About:

Everyone plays a role in the fight to protect the kingdom.

They have always scared Will in the past—the Rangers, with their dark cloaks and shadowy ways. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. What they don't realize is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And now 15-year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice.

How to Teach It:

Talk to your students about being forced into dangerous or uncomfortable situations.

What do they do? Stop three-quarters of the way through Book 1: The Ruins of Gorlan and have students imagine themselves in Will's shoes. How would they finish out his task?
