Book Awards

The following are awarded in recognition of a specific book.

American Library Association Notable Book
The Notable Books Council annual list of important fiction, nonfiction, and poetry books for the adult reader.

Asian American Literature Award
Awarded annually to Asian American writers for excellence in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, memoir, stage plays and screenplays.

American Book Award
Awarded by the Before Columbus Foundation for outstanding literary achievement by contemporary American authors, without restriction to race, sex, ethnic background, or genre.

Black Caucus ALA Literary Award
Awarded for excellence in adult fiction and nonfiction by African American authors published in the previous year, recognition of a first novelist, as well as acitation for Outstanding Contribution to Publishing.

Black Writers Alliance Award
The Black Writers Alliance established the Gold Pen Awards program to recognize the best in literature of the African Diaspora.

Body, Mind, and Spirit Award

BOMC Stephen Crane First Fiction Award
Granted annually to recognize an outstanding first work of fiction in the English language. Each year, the Book-of-the-Month Club's editors and judges select the work of a new writer that best exemplifies the high standard of fictional writing the Club wishes to honor.

Book Sense Book of the Year Nonfiction Award
Winners are chosen by independent booksellers across the country who vote for the titles they most enjoyed handselling to their customers in the previous year.

Booklist Editor's Choice
Every January, Booklist editors select the previous year's top titles in adult books, books for youth, media, and reference.

Books for a Better Life Award
These awards and the annual presentation ceremony recognize the authors and publishers of the best self-help books of the preceding year with contributions from attendees going to the fight against multiple sclerosis.

California Book Award
Honoring the exceptional literary merit of California writers and publishers. Each year a select jury considers hundreds of books in search of the very best in literary achievement.

Christy Award
Given by Christian publishers in recognition of novelists and novels of excellence in half a dozen genres of Christian fiction.

Coretta Scott King Award
Presented annually by American Library Association to authors and illustrators of African descent whose distinguished books promote an understanding and appreciation of the "American Dream." The Award commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and honors his widow, Coretta Scott King.

Edgar Allen Poe Award
The Edgar Allan Poe award is given annually by the Mystery Writers of America. This award acknowledges the best in mystery fiction, non-fiction, television and film published.

Eleanor Maccoby Prize
Awarded by the American Psychological Association to the author (not editor) of a book in the field of psychology that has had or promises to have a profound effect on one or more of the areas of Developmental Psychology.

Hugo Award
Science Fiction achievement award, considered to be the "Oscars" of the science fiction world.

I.M.P.A.C. Dublin Award
International literary award for new works of high literary merit in the English language. Managed by representatives of Dublin City, its Public Library System and IMPAC.

Irish Times Literature Prize
Awarded to books in five categories: International fiction; Irish fiction; Irish non-fiction; Irish poetry; and Irish language.

James Beard Foundation KitchenAid Book Award
Awarded each May by the James Beard Foundation, awards are given for various topics in cooking.

Jerusalem Prize
Awarded every two years for literary achievements in the field of freedom of the individual in society.

Lamda Literary Award
The Lambda Literary Awards, also known as the "Lammys," are awarded annually to recognize excellence in gay and lesbian writing and publishing in the U.S. The awards are sponsored by the non-profit Lambda Literary Foundation.

Lannan Literary Award for Fiction
Lannan Foundation is a family foundation dedicated to cultural freedom, diversity and creativity. Lannan Foundation Awards and Fellowships celebrate excellence in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

Los Angeles Times Book Prize
Honors the printed word in books with an extensive set of formal awards. Presented annually in nine subject categories: biography, current interest, fiction, first fiction (the Art Seidenbaum Award), history, mystery/thriller, poetry, science and technology, and young adult fiction.

Man Booker Prize for Fiction
Aims to reward the best novel of the year written by a citizen of the Commonwealth or Republic of Ireland.

Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters
Awarded annually by the National Book Foundation, the award was created in 1988 to "celebrate an American author who has enriched the literary landscape through a lifetime of service or body of work.".

National Book Award
Awards are given to recognize achievements in four genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people's literature.

National Book Critics Circle Award
Awarded for fiction, nonfiction, biography, autobiography, poetry and criticism. Given by nearly 700 active book reviewers.

Nebula Award
Administered, voted and presented by the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA) to acknowledge excellence in science fiction writing.

New Yorker Book Award
Selected by editors of The New Yorker.

Nobel Peace Prize
Awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee to the person or organization that has done the most to promote peace.

Nobel Prize for Literature
Awarded by the Swedish Nobel Committee for an author's entire body of work.

NYPL's 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing
Selected by the New York Public Library.

O. Henry Award
Granted by the Society of Arts and Sciences to the two best short stories published by American writers in American magazines over the course of a year.

Orange Prize for Fiction
Awarded to a novel by a woman writing in English and published in Britain by a panel of five women: one from the book trade, one from the media, one novelist, one academic and one other high-achieving role-model.

PEN BOMC Translation Prize
Presented by PEN American Center and Book-of-the-Month Club, is given for a distinguished book-length translation from any language into English.

PEN First Book/Memoir Award
Presented by PEN American Center, is given for a distinguished book-length first book and memoir.

PEN/Faulkner Award for American Fiction
Awarded by the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, is a national prize honoring the best published work of fiction by an American author.

PEN/Hemingway Award for Best First Novel
Administered by the New England division of PEN, is presented for a novel or book of short stories by an American author who has not previously published a book of fiction.

PEN/Martha Albrand Award
Presented by PEN American Center, is awarded to an American author for his or her first published memoir, distinguished by qualities of literary and stylistic excellence.

PEN/West Translation Award
Presented by PEN Center USA West, is given for a distinguished book-length translation from any language into English.

Pulitzer Prize for biography or autobiography
Awarded annually by Columbia University on the recommendations of a board of jurors for Biography or Autobiography.

Pulitzer Prize for Drama
Awarded annually by Columbia University on the recommendations of a board of jurors for a play by an American playwright.

Pulitzer Prize for Fiction
Awarded annually by Columbia University on the recommendations of a board of jurors for fiction in book form by an American author and preferably dealing with American life.

Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction
Awarded annually by Columbia University on the recommendations of a board of jurors for nonfiction in book form by an American author.

Pulitzer Prize for Poetry
Awarded annually by Columbia University on the recommendations of a board of jurors for poetry in book form by an American author.

Southern Book Award for Fiction
Presented by the Southern Book Critics Circle composed of book editors and reviewers at newspapers in the South, is awarded to a Southern American author of a work of fiction.

Theodore Geisel Best Book of the Year Award
Presented by The San Diego Book Awards Association to local authors.

Young Readers' Book Awards

The following are awarded in recognition of children's novels and illustrated books.

Alex Award
Awarded annually to ten adult books that will appeal to teen readers. Chosen by The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).

Booklist Editor's Choice
Every January, Booklist editors select the previous year's top titles in adult books, books for youth, media, and reference.

Caldecott Honor
The short list of artists of the most distinguished American picture books for children.

Caldecott Medal
Presented annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Carnegie Medal
The Carnegie Medal is awarded annually to the writer of an outstanding book for children. established by The Library Association in 1936, in memory of the greatScottish-born philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie.

Children's Book Award
The Paul Hamlyn Foundation presents the Children's Book Award for the best work of fiction for children. The award, which has been held since 1980, is unique in that children and children alone decide the winner.

Christopher Award for Nonfiction
Presented each February to works in the young people category, "which affirm the highest values of the human spirit.

The Ezra Jack Keats Book Award
The Ezra Jack Keats Book Award was established in 1985 to recognize and encourage authors and illustrators new to the field of children's books.

Los Angeles Times Book Prize

Newbery Honor
Awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the authors of distinguished American literature for children.

Newbery Medal
Awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
