Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass cover

October 3, 10:30am and October 5, 6:00pm — New York Public Library for the Performing Arts @ 40 Lincoln Center Plaza
This October you'll have two opportunities to show your love for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland if you're already an aficionado, or want to learn what all the fuss is about if you're not. Charlie Lovett, former president of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America (and author of The Bookman's Tale, First Impressions and The Further Adventures of Ebenezer Scrooge), headlines "On A Golden Afternoon" on October 3. Two days later, a panel of artists and scholars will host "Who's Alice," an evening dedicated to examining the curious allure of Lewis Carroll's heroine, who—despite her eternal youth—turns 150 this year.

In the Heart of the Sea

In the Heart of the Sea cover

It's been notoriously difficult to make a good Moby-Dick film, but we fully expect to be thrilled by In the Heart of the Sea, starring Chris Hemsworth and opening December 11th. Inspired by the events that sparked Melville’s great American novel, In the Heart of the Sea pulls from Nathaniel Philbrick's book of the same name to tell the story of the Essex and its crew's harrowing struggle for survival on the open ocean. There's even an appearance by Melville, played by Ben Whishaw. For a deeper understanding of the Essex's history, look no further than our black spine edition of The Loss of the Ship Essex, Sunk by a Whale, a collection of the crew's first-hand accounts with an introduction from the father-and-son team of Thomas and Nathaniel Philbrick.

Queen of the Desert

A Woman in Arabia cover

In the aptly-titled Queen of the Desert, directed by Werner Herzog and slated for release in September, Nicole Kidman plays a young Gertrude Bell, the Victorian explorer who many have called the female Lawrence of Arabia. An accomplished mountaineer, archaeologist, diplomat and spy who helped define the boundaries of the Middle East, Bell was also a gifted writer and poet. A collection of her letters, diary entries, and travel writings appeared just this year in our beautiful black spine Classic A Woman in Arabia, edited and introduced by biographer Georgina Howell.
